I guess I know why these guys aren´t momre known, which can be a good thing from one point of view, but a bad thing in the other hand... I guess most people would start listening to this and the immediate reaction would be :"whatafuckisthisnoise?!?!?" or maybe I´m the one with issues, that could also be a possibility!
Anyway, this is a special post for people with a strange taste in music, or, what most people would consider "not-music". Black engine features 3 members of the Italian jazzcore/experimental band Zu, (Luca Mai - alto & baritone saxophone;
Massimo Pupillo - bass guitar, Jacopo Battaglia - drums), meaning, the musical approach will be very similar but exploring more into free jazz and sometimes drone-jazz, if theres such a thing, than Zu! i guess that comparing to this zu kind of sounds mainstream!! This is headbreaking, but it´s really good music!
If you´re into Zu, Shining, and John Zorn "disciples" you´ll love this!

If you:
- are always expecting new challenging sounds; have a taste for awkward and extreme music; don´t care for your state of sanity, then, I guess you will definitely love this!!!
Shining is a recent band hailing from Norway, and if you know what usually goes on in those deep and cold corners of the world, you know "strange" and usually agressive are good words to describe their musicality! I found this out recently and I was amazed on how good and bizarre this is! I mean, these guys managed to experiment way beyond anything I (n)ever dreamt, managing to do a fusion if some kind between jazz, blackmetal and industrial, achieving a sonority I never heard before. great musicianship (afterall we´re talking about jazz people), constant change of pattern and time-signatures, use os strange notes... huge amount of creativeness, and you´re ears will have some work for some plays through this album!
To what refers to production, nothing to point out 5/5. It was produced by Sean Beavan (NIN, Marilyn Manson, Slayer), so... you´re shure to hear something "decent" and giving you the clean perception of all the layers in this record!
By those who may concern, the last song is a cover from the song "21st century schizoid man" from King Crimson, guesting Enslaved´s Grutle Kjellson on vocals!
This one is for demanding people with demanding taste (I guess).

I know this is brand new, and I know that these guys just released their debut album a couple of months through Candlelight records, and I also know that according to my own "music-blog-beliefs" they shouldn´t be here! But the truth is, they are! Why?! because this is a nice way to promote a new band, even taking into account the perspectives of them being a "bigger" band in a short period of time (I hope).
Why saying all this! The thing is, I´ve listen to this, and I came to the conclusion that these guys know their music! Mixing something trapped between Meshuggah and Dimmu Borgir, they would have to, otherwise it could definitely result in total chaos - not in the good way of course-!
Well, I´m not a big Dimmu Burguer fan, even though they have already had their moments in the past, but I´m a Meshuggah fan, so, If there was something too "copy-pasted" in this, it would´ve left my player instantly! Many bands nowadays consider themselfs as "math-metal", or "mesuggah-oriented" or whatever, these guys managed some kind of combination I´ve never thought possible, mixing the math metal or meshuggah riffs and heaviness with symphonic elements similar to the ones used in Dimmu Borgir! Well, i´m not a big orchestrated metal fan or whatever but they know how to use them in a way that won´t cause you the "I´m sick of these shit" syndrome, but will improve the heaviness they´re trying to show!
Brilliant technician musicians, without being that "virtuosos", but being extremely creative! The only thing I will have to point out my finger is that being these layered-full album, couldn´t be the production a little better?!?! Maybe its just me!
If you´re a Borgir hater, then I don´t think this will siut you, If you are an hardcore meshuggah fan maybe you´ll think it´s fun, if you like new things, then maybe you like this as it is!! advised to fans of Meshuggah, cloudkicker,animals as leaders, textures, strapping young lad, exivious....

Once again it´s been a really long time since the last post, but, what matters is the blog its still running!
A few months ago I stumbled with this band and I was about to post it several times before, so I guess it´s just time for me to do so!!
Apokatastasia is a band hailing from Switzerland, and performs something trapped between prog metal and instrumental metal... well... it´s prog! The smart way thew use string quartet and the other instruments atached to that artform of playng music called metal \m/ got my atention, and gave this album its chance at Earcraft.
While listening to this album, sometimes it reminds me of Apocalyptica, but if you get trapped to this idea you won´t apretiate the whole album. Amazing tech death by these Italian guys. I´m still amazed with this after a few months!!! Imagine a sound influenced by Death´s album Sound of Perseverance with a way better production and with a more actual technicality, but don't think this is just some simple rip-off, oh no, this is way more.. Illogicist present the polyrythmical structure usually used in tech, with great musicianship (the drummer Marco Minnemann kicks ass, and so all of them), and a touch of omnipresent groove to it,, and a great perceptible death growl!!! \m/
For fans of Cynic, Atheist and Death!!! Enjoy and be advised that the new one has just came out!!! :) (after all, it hasn´t, false alarm... my mistake, sorry, but its on his way!!)

Irepress - Sol Eye Sea I (2009)

Irepress is awesome! Believe me. Sol Eye Sea I is their second release and in my opinion their best to this date. A prog-metal/post-rock fusion with fantastic keyboards and sludge and math textures. One thing that they improved from their first record, Samus Octology, was definitely the electronics, and it reflects on the progressive feeling through the entire album. It feels so modern and eclectic, the atmospheric soundscapes, the head-banging explosions, the playfull breaks and electronics, makes me want to listen this every day (and it's true, i've been listening to this for the past 3 weeks everyday!!!).

And back with pride we are!! here we present you with what is to be called an awesome musical discovery!!! It´s just hard not to like this, I´m addicted, and I guess it will be like that for some time! Kosmos are a band from Canada composed by musicians from bands like Paradise, Tricky Woo, Grim Skunk and Voivod... yes Voivod, its drummer Michel Lingevin! If Voivod have more than shown a vein towards prog stuff, in Kosmos Michel takes that to a whole new level! but dont expect to hear metal tunes here, the closest you´ll get will be some ocasional double bass-drum!! In fact you can expect everything "progish" here except metal, from classic prog rock, to avantgard to psychadelic rock, to punk, to krautrock influences ( the name for the 8th track; imagine krautrock, similar to can plus something else, plus some double bass-drum..can´t get enough - listening to this while writing this makes the task hard!!) \m/, and you´ll get your dose of space(ish) rock, and some ambiental too!! so if you´re a fan of any of these genres you will love this over and over!! all with great sound production, rythm, and musicianship!! To prove it KOSMOS Nominated for Quebec Indie Music Awards Metal/Hardcore Album of the Year

Age of silence is an avantgard metal supergroup constituted by members of bands such as Solefald, Mayhem and Khold, and also representing 4 out of 5 members of Winds. All this means that this has all the potential to be a great EP and an even better album!
Personally I enjoy AOS more than Winds, but that is just me... one might disagree. I have read a lot of hard critics towards this project, and to a certain extent I might agree in some of it, but, regardless that this is not one of the most difficult to hear avantgard metal, its an album that need its space to grow in one person, meaning, you may think of this as washed out Arcturus or Winds or whatever, and obliterate these albums in the first few listenings, but if your perserverant you will understand just how great both of them are!
The main difference between AOS and the other similar bands is its kind of simplicity, and its conceptuality which to me were of a great matter, it tells a story of a simple person living its normal life in a kind of Aldous Huxley point of view towards a future society, being able to give you detailed information about its daily life and its surrounding world - 5 stars for the lyrics!!! Plus, If you like clean keyboard you will love this album!!!
I posted both of them here because I find kind of hard to hear one without the other, and being the Complications EP a short run and the first release of the two, I usually listen to it first, and I get kicks out of it when it starts changing to Acceleration, being the two of them a perfect match.
So grab this and comment about it... unfortunately I´ll still have to wait until 2010 to the next album, but until then I´m a happy guy with these two :)

Cemetary - Sundown (1996)

I´ve been hearing this album for about ten years now, and I´m still surprised on how much underrated it is! So... I guess It´s about time to make this post, specially because I have already seen this album available at some other blogs, and they don´t present a comment on the album, not even the right song list, most songs are usually off place (I´m sorry); so, and talk a little about this band, and specially about the album in question - Sundown!!!
Cemetary was born in Sweden in 1989, when the melancholic Swedish vein for metal was breaking through, releasing in the first place some doom(ish) albums, but changing their sound onto a more Gothic rock/metal approach. In Sundown, in my opinion Cemetary managed to reach an absolutely great album, simple in its composition, but truthful in its emotions. I understand the genre need for technical virtuosos, but that sometimes means underrating bands, or even not giving a damn about them, this was the case, Sundown is not a technical album, but can it be a bad thing if it sounds good?!?!?! In my opinion I think not, on the contrary, I´m kind of sick of hearing ultra-technical bands that put technicality above all when writing their material, pushing aside any feeling that music MUST have (in my opinion). Of course you can have a great free-jazz, or fusion, or avantgard full with feeling and stupidly technical: this can be called the cherry on top of the cake. But... this is not what matters, and Cemetary did not intend to create a technical album, instead leaned towards a feeling album, where you have true rock moments, take Elysia for example, and let the rest of the album roll!

Lars Hollmer - XII Sibiriska Cyklar (1981)

Lars Hollmer was one of the masterminds from the legendary RIO group Samla Mammas Manna/Von Zamla. This is his first solo album and my favorite one, so listen to it. To all RIO fans this is a must. Full of folk and avant-garde sensibilities is what to be expected from this album, and a lot of accordion too... a charming, joyfull, clever and unique album.

Baraka OST (1993)

Its been a while since our last post here in Earcraft, not for lack of material, but a sudden shortage of time towards lots of things - Earcraft included. After all this time why posting an OST without any apparent reason when there are certainly way better things to post here? the truth is, this is not just some OST, and my choice of posting this here rests on the fact that just today I was talking with some friends (that have also already seen this movie) and we were commenting on how good it really is. So, this is kind of a way to try to get your interest in seeing the movie!
I watched Baraka a few years ago and I must admit that it really got my attention! First of all, the whole movie depends on the relationship between soundtrack and images displayed, being both of them of a really high quality - meaning, if you have one of those big-ass HD home cinemas at home you will want to make use of them (not our case, but you can tell us how the experience was like afterward :D ). This relationship gets you to follow a certain point of view, on which you can always disagree, but giving you the comfort to do so, of course this helps if you take into account that its made in a documentary format!!
Cutting the crap, this whole movie is one of those films about planet Earth in which you won´t hear a single conversation or monologue, but making you understand exactly its intentions like voices inside your head, making think thats as this movie as the most snob thing ever, but also making you rage, laugh, sorrow and a lot of other human feelings!
Trying to imagine soundtrack to that?! ambient for sure, but good one, being Dead can Dance (Host of Seraphim) amongst them! so.... grab it, smoke it, hear it, watch the movie, enjoy and think how this one could not be the perfect movie to send out to space to explain "us"!?!?!

Airbag . Safetree (EP) - (2007)

Airbag is a band hailing from Norway, and, that I have been listening a lot in the last year! it represents another side differents from the tipycal norwegian black metal sonority, and it show a lot of influences from bands like Pink Floyd, Riverside and radiohead, but with and original approach, these guys were able to achieve their own sound, that show their influences but really sound like..... well... like their own! Its a very beatiful prog-rock EP, very mellow and often melancholic, their lyrical approach is really nice, sothing with a very melllow voice, a really nice guitar work (very guilmourish ) cmpleted with some keyboard and drum of course!
This is an original independent release that has been cooking in the oven before getting here, but I think its time now!
I really enjoy this album, but Safetree is just the last of a series of EP´s released previously, and all are available in Airbag´s official site for free! of course you can make them a donation or buy the albums there, this is just a simple introduction to this band!!!!

Ship of Fools - Out There Somewhere (1994)

What a great album!!!!! I´m trying to get the word for it!! it certainly is categorized as Space-rock prog sub-genre, but it has a lot of 90´s sonority to it (that is definitely a must in my opinion)resembling some Ozric Tentacles!!! this guys released only two albums in their short-story life but they made it worth while!
Last but not least, they have one of my favorite keyboard/synth player, being definitely the instrument that pops out the most, Mr. Les Smith from Anathema, ex-Cradle of Filth, well, ex-alotofthings!!! In Ship of fools he presents us to what he can really do, and to his main musical influences, which lets say, are to take into acount!!!
The second album is the 93’s Close Your Eyes, Forget the World, and will be posted in the future! each thing in its own turn!!! :) Enjoy

Lid - In the Mushroom (1997)

Well, lid is something to talk about.... indeed!!
First of all, just the simple presentation of the members featured in this album should be reason enough for it to be considered!!! In charge of the guitar work Lid presents the lead guitar player from Anathema Danny Cavanagh, and on the vocals we have the ex-lead singer from Trouble Eric Wagner!! well, to me this is way more than enough to try this out, and I certainly did!! The musicianship is nothing extraordinaire, but the feeling is all there, as I´m pretty sure this project was more interested in just making music than worrying about whether it would be appealing to milliions or not, even though it has the presented members, as it was also released by Peaceville!
However it´s sonority is rather appealing, meaning, it´s a really nice exprerience, being probably a good "summer soundtrack" to some!!
Not as technical as Trouble, and deinitely without as many feeling as Anathema, its still a good album to hear though! If you´re an Anathema or Trouble fan, you will want to check this out!! I´m amazed how its not that known!!!

I'm a huge krautrock fan, and although open-minded i like to think that krautrock only applies to late 60s and 70s, any other stuff from other decades that is labelled ´krautrock' i spit in that label and quote 'stuff that looks like krautrock but in fact music that has inspirations from 70s german experimental rock'.

Initially called Sepulchre Inc. and releasing the single «Celebration»in 1989, then changing the name to XXX Atomic Toejam, releasing the EP «A Gathering Of The Tribes For The First Last Human Be-In» in 1993 and one song in the 1994 Karmanik Collection called «I´m a cop», and a full album that never got to happen.
XXX Atomic Toejam is a really strange project band contemporary to the first years of Meshuggah. What does Meshuggah has to do with this?!? Well, the truth is, this is a cooperation between P. Marklund (Memorandum) and Fredrik Thordendal ( Meshuggah ). But if you are hoping to hear some Meshugga-ish sounds in here you will be disappointed. XXX Atomic Toejam is something trapped between Techno, Industrial and dark dance music, with a lot of 80´s sonority to it! If its worth listening to? In my opinion yes, you´ll add another unknown band that did something very interesting - taking into account that both members are known for its metal talents, but also experimentalism - and you have something in your hands really hard to find even in MP3, you have all released material available in here!
So, I guess its worth at least knowing it! If you are a metal fanatic or not very open-minded towards electronic driven music, then I really think you´ll probably hate this, if not, you´ll probably enjoy it, but, if you are into electro-industrial and 80´s dance music, you´ll probably love this!!USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

Canada is one of those well hidden peaceful oysters which once in a while throws little pearls off to the world to recognize. Bands like Gorguts, Voivod and Kataklysm are such examples, here we face a new one! Augury is one band that will get your attention, specially if your a Death metal fan, why? because amongst all the "beauty" that good death metal can offer, its heaviness and usual surprising abilities, shown in this band, it also has the last element: surprise vs creativity vs really good musicians vs something new!
From Concealed first song - Beatus - you´ll quickly understand why! try imagining brutal technical death metal, influenced by the already mentioned Canadian bands Kataklysm and Gorguts, but with a sonority resembling Bay Area style, offering one really sick growl(s), mixed with some prog elements, some grooviness, and some occasional clean female voices on top of it! It might seem awkward, specially because I´m not a big fan of female vocals, but this one fits the band perfectly, being capable of keep you headbanging old style!!! Once you´ve ended with "beatus" you will probably ask to your self "what just happened here?!?!?" - this is already "one of those songs", and the end of it...... just blown me away: my opinion is, try and hear it loud and clear for the first time and you wont be disappointed!!!! and this my friend...its just the first song! :)

Mats/Morgan band - On air with guests

This has to be one of the most underrated bands ever!!!!! And the truth is... I can understand why ..until a certain level!! For some people this might seem indigestible, but to anyone with a taste in experimentalist and new sonorities this just might be IT!!!
Being from Sweden and known for playing one of the most brutal and better progrock/jazz fusion I have EVER heard, they show their skills on a live performance... a really good one lets say!!!! Introducing some of the artists that have played with them during their career, being Fredrik Thordendal and the Spoonman amongst them, they gather a collection of songs from all their albums and introduce them with a lot of improvisation to it!!
Morgan Agren is definitely one of the best drummers out there (and I mean it in the possible best way), having been the drummer for Sol niger within, by thordendal, and Mats Óberg one hell of a keyboard player, with a special inclination towards synthesizers! they both started playing as a band at the age of 10 and 14 (yeah!!!) and have worked with artists like Frank Zappa (oh yeah!!) they show here what virtuosity means when well executed!!! This is the best album you can get to introduce you to this great band!!! so... stop wasting time reading this crap and hear the album, and while you´re at it get the others and buy them!!!! 100% good investment in your music collection!!!! :)

A((wake)) is a tech/extreme-prog band from Oregon USA formed in 2003. This is an album which I really enjoyed and hope to get (the original).
This is not the best example from this kind of sub-genre but it sounds really good and true!! It floats through really heavy instrumental, but being very melodic and sometimes even melancholic, the funny part is, it´s 100% instrumental, so you can call it instrumental-metal if you want (I´ll stay for what I tagged above). Northern lights is the second -independent- album from this band, and I recommend it for anyone with a slight interest for bands like Tool, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Meshuggah...... ok, to any open minded music freak willing to give it a shot!! really good album as far as I´m concerned! Unfortunately I can´t provide the "buy it" link - not just yet - once this is an independent album, and is not being sold yet, it´s just available for download at the bands official page, where more information will be released in the future.

Gorguts - Obscura (1998)

First place I must be honest, I have been thinking about posting this album here several times before, and never have! The reason is that I never was capable of digesting this album entirely, meaning - I´m not very fond of extreme tech death metal! But the truth is... here it is! I believe this is one hell of an album anyway... (this might seem contradictory, but if you don´t believe me, here´s a chance to prove it :). For all tech death metal lovers that don´t already know this, I think it might be a really nice surprise.
Originally from Canada, Gorguts Obscura is an album that actually sounds like chaos and obscurity, but without having anything even similar to drone, or doom. Most of them can´t reach this level of technical composition! In my own opinion too much technical effort is taken into this album, sacrificing the whole "sentimental" side. but that might just be me!
The guitars sound incredibly dissonant, like almost anything I have heard before; the drums are all over the place, beeing probably the most technical instrument in Gorguts (courtesy of Mr. Patrick Robert) and its the thing that grabs me the most to this album! So, if you are a drum fan(atic) you´ll love this! The Bass lines are quite perceptible for what´s common in Death metal! about the vocals.... hmm... desperation growls from hell... yeah, something like that!
The point is,masterpiece if you´re a tech death metal fan, but it can be a never-ending-piece, if you are not into this genre, It´s a demanding album to people used to this sonority! 0% catchy

1980 is a french tech/extreme prog band with a sonority like "Meshuggah meets Fredrik Thordendal meets Mats/Morgan band". In some aspects is almost like a rip off of all these three bands, but with proud (one of the songs is called "meshuggareich"), so, they know what they´re doing!! I wouldn´t post this if there wasn´t some value in this, but the truth is.... there is! Being their debut album, and being a new band, I guess they did one hell of an album. It´s 100% instrumntal, not as good as Thordendal´s special defects (which is one of mine "all-time-best-albums") but being better than many Meshuggah albums! Once it has the Mats/Morgan band influences, you can say its quite fusion-oriented, and its technical enough to please fans from this genre!!! I really think that 1980 still has a lot to offer in future releases, which I really hope, will come!!

Ok, this was definitely a missing album in here!!! This album was musical history as soon as it was released in 1991 , this marked the point for what was to be called "shoegaze", and it still is the peak of this genre after all these years! The most radical true fans may kill me for this, but fuck it! - it is the only album by MBV worth listening!!!
Born in England it was one of the most influencial bands and underated ones, they became officially separated in 1997
Musically speaking, it reveals a lo-fi quality, mixes with a lot of distorted and clean guitars, with subtle voices, but... more melodic than this is hard!
In my oppinion, the best way to listen to this is to just smoke it and lay down still and let the album flow!!! but this is just my oppinion :)

Debut album from this russian band and I have to say: OH MY GOD! One of the best post-rock album i ever heard. From cinematographic ambient (Rm) to space the final frontier landscapes (Clock 77:77 and Face 2 Face) to groovy sounds (Grooba), such an eclectic post rock band it's hard to find. When most of the post-rock bands nowadays try to establish their sound within the genre, these guys have no trouble at all to experiment new stuff. I extremely recomend this one for your ears!

Cyborg - Chronicles (1996)

Cyborg was a band from Denmark which played a kind of new style trash metal, with a lot of digital effects giving to the album a sort of industrial groove into it! It´s worth a chance, but don´t think its a masterpiece by itself, It´s worth it because its the only full-lenght by a band that was never known and which history is almost unavailable. After Chronicles was released Cyborg completely dissapeared, and, I have to be honest, I still don´t know what happened to it´s members!!
This album is worthy of being here by the fact that its a really good album, showing influences by bands like meshuggah, but owning its own "personality". It´s worth a shot, It´s a really good album, from a band that here promises a lot that wasn´t kept by the simple fact that (as been said)... disappeared!!!

This is very simple, Can is one of the best and influential rock bands of the 70s. Why? Well, because they were always searching for new sounds, exploring the music like no other band, in that time. You just have to listen to them.

Prehistoric Future was the first live performance by Can... and improvised. This was in June of 1968 only a few days after the band was formed. A pearl of the avant-garde rock scene. Let's face it, in 68 you had Pink Floyd's psych and spacey A Saucerful of Secrets (awesome!), Soft Machine's trippy psych-jazzy Volume One (brilliant!) and the 3 steps ahead of the world: Can. You can't miss this!

Can recorded live in at the BBC studios from 73 to 75 in four sessions. The first one, Up the Bakerloo Line With Anne, with vocalist Damo Suzuki is an 19 minutes improvisation. Quoting Chris Gleeson (Syzygy) in his review on ProgArchives 'This is Can at the top of their game, demonstrating an almost telepathic interplay and conjuring up mind spinning sounds apparently out of thin air', said it all. The third session, Return to BB City and Tape Kebab, was recorded soon after Damo Suzuki left the band, but that's ok, because these two improvised songs have some kind of space mystic that can make you have a somewhat outerbody experience... and the guitar and keyboard play at Tape Kebab is something that needs to be worshiped. Tony Wanna Go was the second session 9 months earlier, another long improvisation, again we can see here how they feel at ease to play with each others, like they were just one mind... yeah, i think it's natural... too much time spent together playing all day long, every day for several years. the last session, Geheim (half past one) and Mighty Girl, was recorded around 1975 and you notice in a second the differences from the other sessions. Unfortunately it lacks the feeling and intensity of the previous ones, more arranged and closed to classic prog, nonetheless it deserves to be heard.

Confessor - Condemned (1991)

Condemned is the first album from this North Carolina band, and its been known for its way of making listeners loving it or hating it. The truth is that condemned is one of those albums which made a lot of ink run in what refers to critics.
Condemned was released in 1991 and immediately become a musical masterpiece. In their first album Confessor showed the world how technicality and feeling could live together!
Musically speaking, this album may seem a bit strange to digest in the first few listenings, specially because of the high-pitched voice from Scott Jeffrey, reminding something like "80´s heavy metal meets grunge", but once you get used to it you´ll really enjoy it! To what instruments are concerned, It´s difficult not to notice the brilliant Steven Shelton´s drumming, full of polyrythms, and always omnipresent!!! guitars and bass always follow a line quite different from the rest, revealing something in the end that really shouldn´t work, but sounds perfectly amazing!
This is one of those bands which didn´t work out that well, being recognized by having influenced lots of "bigger bands" like Lamb of God, Anathema, Paradise Lost and even Nile.
They began their career with a contract with Earache, known for having wored with some of the most important metal bands in the 90´s! After Condemned was released, Confessor started a tour called Gods of Grind, playing with bands that were also starting their careers - Carcass, Cathedral Entombed.

DEMILICH - NESPITHE (1993)

Pushing back to 93 this masterpiece of death metal was released, and it was the only full-length album by some really young guys! but, thats not the point. the truth is.. I don´t know exactly what to say about this album, just that in my opinion every "metalhead" should have in their collection - or at least hear it - yes, it´s at the same level that Gorguts' classic Obscura album, probably less technical, but better in my oppinion!
but lets get to the point! musically speaking, it´s a new experience! it really, really dark and obscure, even though its masterization doesn´t help, its not that bad! in technicality its great, lots of distorted guitar, one hell of a drummer and one of the sickest vocals you´ll EVER hear. Unfortunately the bass guitar isn´t that perceptible, like its usual in most old school death metal albums! In what its refered to the lyrics, its almost a conceptual album, but without the "prog" factor! enjoy the lyrics!

This has to be one of the best extreme prog albums ever! It has it all, it has twisted rhythms and guitars, brain damaging solos, mathematical passages from part to part! But, Besides all it´s complexity (which is a lot, lets say) Its has feeling, it´s human. Its a masterpiece of the 90´s, and it still sounds actual, and it will stay that way for a long time! This album can take you for a walk in your aggressive inner self, and right next show your intimate nostalgia and introspection! It´s one of those got to have in your CD collection!
Sol Niger Within" is one of the hardest albums to decipher you will ever have the opportunity to hear. Seeing as Fredrik Thordendal is the guitarist for Meshuggah, and Meshuggah's music is full of polyrhythms, you know this album isn't going to be conventional in any way. That's where the inaccessability lies...the music is so random, so all over the place, it really isn't one to headbang to. Yet the music fits into it's own unique pattern. You can definitely hear the Meshuggah and jazz influences throughout the album, which makes for one brain-warping journey. If you've ever heard music from a band called Spastic Ink, this is similar in technicality, but this is more jazzy.
